Published on: August 14, 2026

20 mL of calcium hydroxide was consumed when it was reacted with 10 mL of unknown solution of H 2 SO 4 . Also 20 mL standard solution of 0.5 M HC1 containing 2 drops of phenolphthalein was titrated with calcium hydroxide, the mixture showed pink colour when burette displayed the value of 35. 5 mL whereas the burette showed 25.5 mL initially. The concentration of H 2 SO 4 is_______M. (Nearest integer)

The correct answer is:
1

(1) Titration principle is N 1 V 1 = N 2 V 2

N=Normality

V = Volume of solution

M 1 V 1 n 1 = M 2 V 2 n 2

M = molarity

n = Valence factor of acid or base

As pink colour is obtained on consumption of 10 ml of Ca(OH) 2 , we have

20x0.5x1= 10xMx2

Molarity of Ca (OH) 2 =

Also, moles of Ca(OH) 2 = mm of H 2 SO 4

x 20 = 10 x M Molarity of H 2 SO 4 = 1M
